How to Become a Kit House Detective: Authentication of Mail Order Homes
Pre-cut or “kit” homes were ordered by mail from companies such as Aladdin and Sears. They were copied from the most popular styles of the day, creating homes that would blend in with their neighbors.
But for the efforts of a few dedicated researchers, the locations of these homes would remain a mystery. Learn about the history of mail order buildings, efforts to locate these homes, and how to recognize interior evidence of kit house origin.
The Society welcomes historical architectural
researcher Rebecca Hunter who will share her
fascination with mail order homes at this Sunday
at the Center program.
