Description
Marcellus E. Jones was a Lieutenant in the Civil War and also a Danby (now Glen Ellyn) resident. His claim to fame was that he fired the “First Shot” at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. A Commemorative Marker is in place at the battle scene in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. A replica of Jones's First Shot marker will be dedicated in Ward Plaza on Friday, October 19, 2018 at 5:30 PM. Many people contributed to this remembrance also in honor of the Battle's 155th Anniversary. Ward Plaza is located at Main Street and St. Charles Road in Glen Ellyn. Everyone is invited! Refreshments will be served in the Glen Ellyn History Center at 800 N. Main St. after the ceremony. Call 630-469-1867 for information and check the website at
