DESCRIPTION:
The Glen Ellyn Public Works Department is a vital organization for a community of roughly 29,000 residents in the western suburbs of Chicago. We are recruiting for an employee in the Utilities Division, which is responsible for maintaining the Village’s drinking water, sanitary, and storm sewer systems.
This could be an entry-level opportunity for a Maintenance Worker I (MWI) or, for the right candidate with relevant experience, a Maintenance Worker II (MWII) position. This role performs a variety of tasks related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of public infrastructure, along with playing an integral role in snow and ice control operations. Examples of applicant skills preferred for a MWI but required for a MWII (or an equivalent combination of similar skills and experience):
- Perform JULIE locates for water and sewer
- Operation of backhoe for water and sewer excavations
- Operation of a flusher and/or combination unit for sewer cleaning
- Ability to repair/replace fire hydrants, water valves, water mains & services
- Experience operating sewer televising equipment
- Class ‘B’ CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements
- Class D Illinois EPA Water Operator’s License, Sewer Collections Systems Operator, PACP/LACP certification, or other specialized training/certification related to water and sewer
Position is required to respond to emergencies during regular and after hours, on evenings, weekends, and holidays. Other related duties as assigned. Position reports directly to the Division’s Crew Leader.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance duties.
- Operate a variety of vehicles and heavy-duty tools properly & safely.
- Ability to think quickly, use good judgment, and effectively solve problems
- Perform water main and service locating; detect water leaks with a correlator.
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair water services, mains, valves, meters, and hydrants.
- Assist in maintaining the water plant and lift stations.
- Maintain, clean and repair sanitary and storm sewer mains and structures.
- Repair sewer services and perform sewer televising.
- Prepare accurate work records including time spent and materials used, with entry into a computer.
- Set-up safe work zones and use appropriate safety equipment.
- Assist in emergency response operations.
- Participate in snow removal operations according to the snow and ice removal plan.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, possession of a college degree or advanced training is preferred.
- For MWI: One (1) year of experience in general construction or maintenance work is a plus.
- For MWII: Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in the water and sewer industry is expected.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and a Class “B” CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
- Must be able to operate heavy-duty equipment such as backhoe, loader, skid steer, flusher, sewer camera, and snowplow trucks.
- Position requires participation in emergency response during and after normal hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
The duties of this job include physical activities such as stooping, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, walking, lifting and/or moving (up to 75 pounds), grasping, pulling/pushing, twisting, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, occasional typing, and repetitive motions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
Employee occasionally works around vibrations and noise, moving mechanical parts, confined spaces and underground trenches, heights, and is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and extreme outdoor temperatures. Work environment includes primarily outdoor work in various types of weather conditions, with some indoor work as well.
WORK SCHEDULE:
The general work schedule is Monday-Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Must be able to respond to after-hours call-backs and be prepared for and confront emergency conditions as necessary.
SALARY/BENEFITS:
This is a full-time, non-exempt (overtime eligible) position with full benefits and participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), a defined benefit retirement plan. Our comprehensive benefits package also includes health, dental, and vision insurance, life/AD&D coverage, flexible spending, transit, 457 deferred compensation plan, paid time off, a wellness incentive program, and tuition reimbursement. The hourly pay range for a MWI is $26.71- $37.40 and for a MWII $28.06 - $39.28, actual starting pay to commensurate with experience.
