DESCRIPTION:
The Village of Glen Ellyn is a vibrant community in the western suburbs of Chicago, serving ~29,000 residents. The Public Works Department is recruiting for one (1) part-time Maintenance Worker I position. This position performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of public infrastructure mostly focused on supporting the division by performing street sweeping and snow removal during the associated seasons. Position is expected to respond to emergencies off-hours, including snow plowing activities, on evenings, weekends, and holidays. Provides courteous and efficient service to Village employees, residents, and the public; and performs other related duties as assigned. Position reports directly to the Division’s Crew Leader.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance duties.
- Operate a variety of vehicles and heavy-duty tools and equipment properly & safely.
- Perform street & sidewalk maintenance such as concrete and asphalt pavement and sidewalk repairs
- Operate the street sweeper as part of the weekly sweeping cycle, as well as special event and Central Business District sweeping as needed.
- Maintaining accurate records of work performed, including computers and software systems.
- Set-up safe work zones and use appropriate safety equipment.
- Participate in snow removal operations according to the snow and ice removal plan.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
- Install and maintain traffic control devices in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic control Devices (MUTCD).
- Manufacturer, maintain, and install street signs and posts.
- Maintain streetlights, traffic signals, and parking meters
- Conduct J.U.L.I.E. locates for the Village’s electrical lines.
- Install and maintain streetscape infrastructure (benches, trash cans, fencing, etc.)
- Assist the public and private contractors with questions and concerns.
- Assist in special event setup & staffing and emergency response operations.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of previous work experience in public works, general construction, infrastructure maintenance, or related field. Prior experience with operating various heavy-duty tools and equipment is a plus.
- Candidates must possess a Class B-CDL with air brake endorsement.
- Must be able to operate equipment like a street sweeper, plow truck, loader, skid steer, or bucket truck.
- Position requires basic computer skills to perform tasks and track time.
Mobility to work in a field maintenance setting, use stamina to perform heavy labor for extended periods of time; agility to perform maintenance activities and operate equipment; strength to lift and carry up to 75 pounds or more with the another’s assistance; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. The duties of this job include physical activities such as stooping, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, walking, lifting and/or moving (up to 75 pounds), grasping, pushing/pulling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, and repetitive motions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
Work is primarily performed in a field setting and can involve extensive driving. Employee occasionally works around vibrations and noise, moving mechanical parts, confined spaces and underground trenches, heights, and is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and extreme outdoor temperatures. Work is primarily outdoors in various types of weather conditions, with some indoor work as well.
WORK SCHEDULE
The average number of hours would be sixteen (16) hours per week, split between two (2) eight (8) hour days. Shifts worked would generally follow an established schedule but there is some flexibility. Total hours worked per year would be less than one thousand (1,000). The general work schedule is Monday-Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Must be able to respond to after-hours call-backs and be prepared for and confront emergency conditions as necessary.
SALARY/BENEFITS:
The pay range for this position is $26.7187/hr. to $37.4062/hr. with the actual starting pay dependent upon qualifications. This position is non-exempt under FLSA, with accrued paid time of beginning the first day of employment.
