Description
The Glen Ellyn History Center, 800 N. Main Street in Glen Ellyn, is the location of the Salt Creek Civil War Roundtable Book Sale and special program featuring the music of the 1850's and 1860's. Friday, October 21 the Book Sale begins at 6:30 PM and the program follows at 8:00 PM. The presenter is Art Foley and he will speak about composer George F. Root who composed many of the classics we associate with the 1850's and 1860's. Root was a popular song writer in his day and was influenced by the Civil War. In 863 he wrote, “The First Gun Fired,” and then in 1864 he composed “The Battle Cry of Freedom.” Other songs attributed to Root were, “Tramp, Tramp, Tramp,” and “The Vacant Chair.” This entire evening event is free of charge. No admission necessary. Call 630-469-1867 for information and check the website at www.glenellynhistory.org.
