DESCRIPTION:
The Glenbard Wastewater Authority (“the Authority”) is recruiting for a full-time Maintenance Mechanic II or III position. The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the preventative maintenance, repair, and replacement related activities at its advanced treatment facilities, including work on plant machinery, conveyor systems, piping systems, buildings, vehicles, and grounds; and to provide responsive, courteous, and efficient service to the residents of the Villages of Lombard and Glen Ellyn and the general public. Applicants’ extent of experience and qualifications will determine which level of the Maintenance Mechanic role will be filled and which job functions listed below are applicable.
JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Utilize Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) as directed to initiate Preventive and Corrective Maintenance on plant facilities and equipment; help with development of maintenance procedures for plant facilities and equipment; provide updated CMMS records on equipment maintenance and rehabilitation activities.
- Observe variation in equipment operating conditions; interpret meter and gauge readings; report malfunctions; and use knowledge and experience to take appropriate and immediate corrective action, or recommend potential remedies to Maintenance Superintendent when required.
- Interpret, develop, read and understand drawings and blueprints; maintain records, make periodic written or oral reports as directed.
- Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on plant machinery and equipment to improve equipment life and avoid unplanned maintenance activities, including:
- Diagnose and repair of machines, equipment and systems with hand and power tools using pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, safety, electrical, and electronic systems
- Inspection for heat, sound, vibration, odor, cleanliness
- Oiling and greasing
- Participate in minor repairs and equipment installations under supervision as required.
- Perform proactive scheduled equipment refurbishment and replacement to sustain plant operating requirements.
- Operation of heavy construction equipment and commercial rated vehicles including: front-end wheel loader, mini-excavator, trencher, semi-tractor trailer combination, 6-wheel dump truck, truck with permanently mounted crane, and/or fork-lift truck.
- Perform work in “Permit and Non-Permit Required” confined spaces, meet facility safety training requirements, and maintain other required health and safety certifications according to OSHA
- Perform precision layout and fabrication of various parts necessary for maintenance activities, using varied metals, plastics, wood, etc. using welding, metal working, pipe threading, cutting, and bending tools.
- Perform skilled installation and repair of all types of pipes, valves, and appurtenances associated with mechanical pipe fitting and plumbing activities using welding, cutting, heating, bending, straightening, brazing and soldering as required.
- Assist in maintaining an inventory of tools, equipment, parts, and perform requisition of parts and materials as necessary for maintenance activities.
- Participate as a member of the various committees on a rotating basis, such as the Safety Committee, Sustainability Committee, or others that may arise.
- Assist Operational and Electrical employees as assigned by the Maintenance Superintendent.
- Conduct functional and technical training for Operations and Electrical Division employees for preventative/predictive mechanical maintenance tasks.
- Perform data entry to maintain equipment database, maintenance of job details, safety records, maintenance activity assignments, and historical equipment and maintenance activity records.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, in addition to previous wastewater treatment plant, water treatment plant or industrial plant maintenance experience and/or demonstrated competence in mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, or hydraulic systems by means of related work experience.
- Maintenance Mechanic III – entry level/up to one (1) year of previous experience
- Maintenance Mechanic II – minimum of three (3) years of previous experience
The Authority is willing to accept applications for less qualified individuals if they are a good fit for the organization. Must also have a valid driver’s license at the time of application; must obtain a Class A CDL within one-year of employment.
Qualified applicants should demonstrate the ability to define problems and exercise good judgment and think quickly under both routine and emergency situations; the ability to develop positive working relationships with the general public, vendors, and coworkers is also a critical skill set. The ability to operate various types of heavy-duty tools and equipment is a plus. Must be able to perform mathematical calculations, and possess the ability to comprehend, retain, and apply the Authority’s rules and procedure manuals, including any pertinent Federal, State, or local laws. Position also requires proficiency with reading and interpreting plans, blue prints, and schematic drawing; and candidates must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Proficiency in using computerized maintenance management software systems and MS Office software is also important.
The duties of this job include physical activities such as stooping, kneeling, standing, reaching, walking, lifting and/or move (up to 100 pounds), grasping, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, and repetitive motions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to work in malodorous, nauseating and hazardous work conditions Applicants who do not meet all of the qualification requirements may still be considered for the position by the Authority.
The general work schedule is Monday-Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Must also be able to respond to after-hours call-backs and be prepared for and confront emergency conditions as necessary.
SALARY/BENEFITS:
This is a full-time, non-exempt position with full benefits and participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), a defined benefit retirement plan. This position is non-exempt under FLSA. Actual starting salary is negotiable, and will be dependent upon qualifications, experience, and professional achievement. The pay offered for this position will depend on which role will be filled, with the range between the two roles (Maintenance Mechanic II and III) being $58,373/year (range F) to $85,819/year (range G).
